2024 FORD RANGER

Entry-level Rangers come with a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder that engine makes 270 horsepower, and, in our experience, provides ample power to hustle the mid-size truck around. A new twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter V-6 comes on higher trims and makes 315 horsepower. Both are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission and can be had with rear- or four-wheel drive.

2024 HYUNDAI SANTA

There are two powertrains available for the Santa Cruz, with the engine choice decided by the trim. The SE and SEL fit a 2.5-liter four-cylinder making 191 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque, shifting through an eight-speed automatic transmission. When we tested the same motor in the Hyundai Tucson SUV—on which the Santa Cruz is based—we found the acceleration sluggish at best.

2024 JEEP GLADIATOR

The Gladiator is powered by a 3.6-liter V-6 that produces 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque routed through a standard six-speed manual transmission or an optional eight-speed automatic. We tested an Overland model with the automatic, which needed 7.2 seconds to scoot to 60 mph. In other words, it's slightly slower than most competitors. Every Gladiator comes with a 5.5-foot truck bed. Compared with the regular Wrangler, the Gladiator has an extra 19.4 inches between the front and rear wheels.

2024 FORD RANGER

A 10.1-inch infotainment display is standard but buyers with a focus on tech can upgrade to an even bigger, vertically oriented 12.4-inch screen. Ford's latest Sync 4 interface runs on both and provides access to the Ranger's various controls, including activating a new zone-lighting feature that turns on lights on the outside of the truck to light a job site or provide illumination to finish setting up camp in the dark.

2024 HYUNDAI SANTA

The base SE and SEL come standard with an eight-inch infotainment touchscreen. The SEL can be optioned with a larger 10.3-inch display, the three trims above come with it. Crisp graphics and smooth operation are pluses; however, we think the company's decision to omit any physical controls is a misstep. The Santa Cruz offers an array of driver-assistance technology, including a standard driver-attention warning and optional adaptive cruise control.

2024 JEEP GLADIATOR

Every Gladiator uses a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The stereo system can also be upgraded with an optional subwoofer and portable wireless speaker behind the back seat. Although the Jeep pickup is available with a handful of driver-assistance technology, its roster is significantly smaller than some competitors'. Jeep adds standard side-curtain airbags for 2024 for both first- and second-row passengers.

2024 FORD RANGER

Most new Ford Ranger models have an exterior length of 210.6 inches, with the Ford Ranger Raptor's overall length at 210.9 inches. The Ford Ranger's exterior width measures 86.7 inches with the mirrors extended, while the body width sans mirrors is 79 inches.

2024 HYUNDAI SANTA

The cargo bed of the Santa Cruz measures 52.1 inches, with 27 cubic feet of bed volume. Beneath the bed you will find an underfloor storage area that is 18.25 inches long, 37.75 inches wide and 7 inches tall.Payload Capacity: 1,411 pounds. Towing Capacity: 5,000 pounds.
